Safety of Biotech Crops Backed By Rigorous Science
Biotech opponents continue to cite junk science in an attempt
to link GMOs with harm to humans and animals (“One
man’s science is another’s misinformation”
(Letters, May 13).
They cite research by Dr. Mae Won Ho that has not passed
the quality control procedure of peer review and publication
in a scientific journal. Her “research,” often
unsubstantiated claims by others, describes experiments that
cannot be replicated, as well as experiments that have been
widely criticized and dismissed by multiple regulatory authorities
after careful consideration. In short, Dr. Ho’s claims
have not been confirmed by independent research, which contradicts
her views.
Clearly, dissenting opinions are commonplace in all arenas
of science, and the debate provides a positive and healthy
environment for learning. However, at the end of the day,
most scientists draw their conclusions by taking into account
the weight of evidence and the prevailing view of experts.
There are hundreds of published studies that have shown
no adverse effects from biotech crops. There is a lack of
publications showing adverse effects. Time and again, study
after study has documented that biotech crops are safe as
food and feed, and safe for the environment.
