Kauai agronomist feels connection to the land

More than 40 years later, with Hawai`i’s former mainstay crops — pineapple and sugar — downgrading to minor agriculture players, seed development companies are the highest economic value agriculture crop in the state.

Pioneer and other seed companies are creating “parent” seeds in Hawai`i, which are grown in greater quantity on the mainland and sold to farmers there to grow crops. The ultimate crop is a grain corn, rather than the corn-on-the-cob sweet corn people eat as a vegetable.
